When I told my sister, the middle one of us three girls, how S and I were talking about possible reactions from people if we did break up her response was typical to her personality. She compared my situation to her situation from a few years back and, like always, her situation was 10X WORSE(!!!) than mine. This response, although not out of the ordinary, was definitely not what I needed.

I understand that her break-up was hard and took her by surprise. She was going to move across the ocean for a man who apparently decided one day that he did not love her enough.  It was devastating. It was also over two years ago and she and this man are together now.

Her comparison, although probably not intentional, cheapened my own feelings and, in that moment, I hated her for it. Her experiences and feelings are always felt more by her. Her stress, her pain, her love, her work. It’s always more something than mine or anyone else’s, for that matter. She lives in superlatives, which is very frustrating to deal with sometimes.

S and I share the same friends. I am very close to his family. We live, play, and do almost everything together. I’ve told my friends and family that I think he is “the One”. It will be extremely hard for both of us if we do break-up. For once, it would have been nice if she had not turned this situation into a competition.

Just this once.
